KastKing BioSpool made from wheat stalk waste

KastKing®, headquartered in Garden City, NY, is excited to announce they have produced a BioSpool made from bio-based wheat waste for their fishing line products.

KastKing®, a fishing tackle manufacturer that produces fishing line in addition to fishing reels and fishing rods, has raised the bar for corporate environmental responsibility in the fishing tackle industry.  KastKing® fishing line BioSpools will break down in a landfill decreasing landfill bulk.

KastKing® BioSpools are made with wheat straw waste products and will replace traditional hard plastic spools. KastKing® BioSpools are biodegradable and compostable. BioSpool will deteriorate in soil in eight to twelve months.

“As an angler, at any one time I may have ten to fifteen empty fishing line spools to dispose of.  I thought about the enormous number of spools of fishing line KastKing ships daily,” says Tom Gahan, KastKing’s Chief Marketing Officer who conceived the idea for the KastKing® BioSpool. “Even more so, the number of hard plastic spools the industry as a whole produces annually.

“Wheat straw is what remains after wheat grain is harvested.  An added value of this development is that not all countries and communities have plastic recycling programs. It doesn’t matter where you live, unlike hard plastic, after a reasonable amount of time BioSpool will eventually decompose wherever it ends up.

“Wheat straw is a far better option than cardboard, which relies on harvesting forests.  Wheat straw waste is leftover byproduct that until now had limited use. Compared to trees it is an annually renewable resource. In some countries farmers burn wheat stalks after harvest, which contributes to air pollution. BioSpool takes wheat waste out of the cycle.”

“KastKing® has always been a Green Company that has fostered environmental responsibility,” says Tate Cui CEO at Eposeidon – KastKing. “We’ve been paperless since we started. We don’t print catalogs, but instead, rely solely on product sales through online digital platforms.  BioSpool is another small, but important step. It addresses our vision statement, which comments on our sensitivity to the environment.  KastKing challenges the fishing tackle industry to use environmentally responsible packaging. As we move into the future KastKing® will look to use this process, and other biodegradable and compostable components, in our product lines.”

KastKing, a member of the Eposeidon family of brands, introduces their BioSpool at booth #3863 at ICAST (International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades), the world’s largest fishing tackle trade show,  in the OCCC (Orange County Convention Center) Orlando Florida July 12, 13, 14, 2017. KastKing®, whose slogan is “affordable innovation”, won an ICAST Best of Show Award in 2015 for their products.
